Critical and Contextual Studies
We all love looking at artists work. We use drawing, sketching, paintings, textiles, sculpture and lots of resources to help us understand how an artist would have worked. We often work with ‘real’ artists in school - that’s the best bit!!!
Drawing
No one in our school says ‘I can’t draw’
We all learn to use lots of drawing tools with confidence and we love to talk about our work. Our teachers help us to look carefully and talk about the things we can see, hear and feel.
Sketch Books
We all have sketchbooks and use them to record our work. We also draw a plant, a picture of our mum and create an imaginative picture for our teachers to assess how well we are doing. In Year 2 and Year 6 we also make special sketchbooks for our art club.
Ceramics
“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."
Michelangelo
We use ceramics to portray many themes. This was work based on the famous artist Georgia O’Keefe
We all use clay with confidence because we can. Our teacher, Mrs Cunningham, is a specialist teacher. She takes small groups and teaches us to look closely, talk about our thoughts or feelings - then we draw or paint our ideas. Then we make amazing pieces of sculpture. Sometimes they are flat pieces like tiles, and we often make figures- do you like them?
The Year 6 children get the opportunity to learn to make thrown wear as an extra activity to enhance their work with clay.

Painting and Adding Colour
We use lots of different media at school. Powder paint, inks, pastels, watercolour, dyes and acrylic. The best times are when we paint really big pictures.
Textiles
We use textiles to enhance our work in ceramics and we love using batik to portray our images.
Our work is displayed around the school and after a residential visit to Beaford in North Devon we have a large exhibition of all our work in the Arts.
So there you are. A snapshot of all the opportunities we have to develop our talents in Art and Design. We are very proud of our work and hope that it’s enjoyed by you as much as we enjoyed doing it. We also have some fantastic web sites that we can use hope you like the links.
