Thornbury Primary is funded by Plymouth City Council to provide 10 places at Key Stage 2 for pupils with complex and specific speech and language difficulties.  Each pupil benefiting from a place has a statement of special educational needs.

ESP places are allocated by strict admissions criteria, following referral from an Educational Psychologist.  There can be no more than three pupils in each year group.

A specialist part-time teacher and the equivalent of three full-time learning support assistants staff the ESP.

The main aims of the ESP are to provide:

  • access to a broad and balanced curriculum, including the National Curriculum,  differentiated to meet specific needs
  • discussions which inform classroom practise, with regard to specific speech and language difficulties
  • programmes to further develop specific speech and language skills
  • opportunities for parental involvement
  • suitable opportunities for social interaction

The ESP is inclusive with pupils being carefully taught in mainstream classes for the majority of the time.  Many class-based activities are differentiated, whilst there is some withdrawal for specialist teaching or speech and language support.

Class teachers, the specialist teacher and learning support assistants work closely together to assess, monitor and record attainments and progress.   The ultimate aim is to ensure that the requirements of the statement, as well as pupils’ learning and emotional needs, are met.
