Children Learn by What They Live

by Dorothy Law Nolte

If a child lives with criticism,
he learns to condemn,

If a child lives with hostility,
he learns to fight,

If a child lives with ridicule,
he learns to be shy,

If a child lives with shame,
he learns to feel guilty,

If a child lives with tolerance,
he learns to be patient,

If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence,

If a child lives with praise,
he learns to appreciate,

If a child lives with fairness,
he learns justice,

If a child lives with security,
he learns to have faith,

If a child lives with approval,
he learns to like himself,

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,

He learns to find love in the world.

Welcome to the Thornbury School Website.

Along with many people, you may well have wondered what governors actually do. The Governing Body consists of people from all walks of life, including business and professional people, councillors, staff from school, LEA reps and of course, parents of children currently attending the school. Governors, in partnership with the Head Teacher and the Senior Management Team, work to oversee the strategic development of the school, their main aim being to provide a high standard of education for all pupils, no matter what their ability or needs. In addition to this strategic view, they also act as a critical friend and ensure accountability.

Education is changing constantly and that has never been more true than currently at Thornbury. We have a new Head Teacher for the first time since the inception of the school in 1978, a new Chair of Governors and a governing body which has also changed substantially in terms of personnel over the past 12 months. Change is never easy in any walk of life but these are exciting and challenging times for everyone connected with education generally and with Thornbury School in particular. We look forward to a renewed focus on standards, particularly in literacy and numeracy, and providing the best level of education possible for your children.

Finally, please remember that the Governors are always available to you and if you should require any further information or need to contact one of us, please do not hesitate to do so.
