David Blunkett, the former Secretary of State for Education, firmly believes:

“Where all children are included as equal partners in the school community the benefit is felt by all.”

This is an aim, which Thornbury Primary School aspires to.

Thornbury Primary School believes that the development of inclusion and a genuine choice of mainstream education for all those who want it, is a human rights issue.  It is also a government funding issue if their vision is to be realised.

At Thornbury we see inclusion as a process of ongoing, whole school change.  A process whereby the existing ethos is further developed and where all pupils are welcomed, supported and valued.  An inclusive education should offer excellence and choice and incorporate the views of the parents and children.

We recognise that our policy on equal opportunities is the beginning of a process which ultimately should lead to equality for all those pupils who require an ‘inclusive education’.  All children should have access to an appropriate education that affords them the opportunity to achieve their personal potential.

Inclusion however, involves refining cultures, policies and practice and therefore commitment from all the staff is essential.  Change is a slow process, but essential, the reward is diversity, which can provide a rich resource to support everybody’s learning.

OFSTED defines an educationally inclusive school as “one in which the teaching and learning, achievements, attitudes and well being of every young person matter.”  We believe that statement to already be part of our culture.
