THRASS

  • Training for teachers and big expenditure on resources. ‘THRASS’ integrated into daily 15 minute word work across the infants and Year 3.
  • Year 2 being introduced to ‘THRASS ICT’ program with LSA.

Spelling Diaries

  • Phonic and High Frequency word diaries for each Year Group, each term.
  • Taught as part of daily word work.
  • Practise at home using L, C, W, Ch as ideal.
  • Weekly checks and reteaching as necessary.

Hearing Reading

  • Weekly in Years r and 1 on a 1:1 basis as ideal, fortnightly by Year 2.
  • Parents (trained).
  • ‘Right to Read’ programme.
  • ‘Reading Club with Juniors - once a week for Year 1 and twice a week for Year 2.

Comprehension

  • Emphasis on oral comprehension for Year R and 1.
  • End of module comprehension practise from past SAT papers for Year 2 - L3 H/B, L2 M/B, L2 adapted L/B.

Speaking and Listening

  • High quality role play areas; high level of adult input.
  • Listening centres used in Years R and 1 especially.
  • ILEA games - LSAs.

Key Stage 1 Literacy

Oxford Reading Tree

  • Graded reading scheme introduced in Reception Class.
  • Colour coded ‘teddy’ with core vocabulary for each ORT level.
  • Daily practise at home as ideal.
  • Sight vocabulary tested using flashcards on a regular basis.
  • By Year 2, H/B children reading range of genres and other scheme books.
  • All children borrow a ‘Sharing Library Book’ on Friday.

Literacy Groups

  • Ability Banded for targeted reading.
  • Year 2 additional teacher for Literacy to ensure smaller groups of 18.

Writing

  • Introduction of Success Ladders in year 1 and across Year 2
  • Carefully modelled process à independent writing opportunities
  • Writing Assessments at the end of each module

Handwriting

  • Sassoon Primary style taught on a Monday with daily practise slots; single letter formation in range of contexts across the day at Year R

Breakthrough to Literacy

  • Introduced in highly structured manner at Year R.
  • Children introduced to Individual Sentence Maker (ISM) at Year 1.
  • Practised in Years R and 1 and by low band Year 2 for a minimum of three times a week (Low Band Year 2 weaned off by the end of the year where possible).

Early Literacy Strategy

  • Two group of 6 at Year 1 and Year 2 for phonic work using Progression in Phonics book, ELS materials (45 minutes with LSA) [Also Words and Pictures]

Early Morning Reading Groups

  • Targeted intervention groups of 6, daily for 45 minutes with an LSA
  • Shared read of ORT big book
  • Practise of individual ORT book
  • Game linked to ORT book/core words etc.
  • Practise of word pack/ISM

Word Packs

  • Small packs of core Breakthrough words for daily practise at sentence making and key words.
  • There are graded for difficulty and tested at the beginning and end of term to monitor progress, the children move on when they are ready.
  • Daily practise at home as ideal and tested.

Storysacks

  • High quality set of 18 Storysacks (range of genre) available for sharing at home in Reception (Training for parents given) on a weekly rota

Transition Groups

  • Small group (up to 3) for intensive, tailored programme (15 minutes with Year 2 teacher) for children leaving above (daily)
