English is at the heart of our curriculum.
As well as a daily Literacy lesson in every year group,
Literacy enhances every area of the curriculum.

Speaking and Listening underpins everything we do!

From the very beginning, we aim to promote a love of reading in our children and use a range of approaches. One of these is our bank of highly successful Story Sacks.

We use Oxford Reading Tree and Breakthrough to Literacy across KS1 to support our children’s Literacy development.

Another key element is role play and we aim to provide a variety of stimulating environments to support our project areas.

As children move into Key Stage 2 we aim to develop further their LiteracyPhoto - Our new Library skills. We have recently opened our brand new library for the Juniors, which has a state of the art system for tracking and loaning books.

Another initiative which has had a big impact on both writing and assessment is our pack of Success Ladders‘. Our Fiction Based projects and Book Week are highlights of our year. Guest authors, poets and dramatists are invited in to share their work.

Speaking and Listening

Our school philosophy is children becoming articulate speakers and reflective thinkers underpin all learning.

We frequently build in times where children take part in debate, discussion, drama and role play activities. These activities take place as a fore runner to writing, linked to a class topic and in many other ways across the taught and hidden curriculum.

We invite visitors in regularly for a range of different purposes e.g. Grandparents during a World War 11 topic, a governor taking on the role of a character from the class book.

Reading

Our children, learning to read and developing a love of books is one of our fundamental aims.

We do this initially through a highly structured phonics programme – Letters and Sound. Then as the children’s decoding skills develop, we work towards children’s increasing comprehension of what they read.

We use a mixture of scheme and real books (including E learning material)

Annually we hold a Book week where children share books across the school and meet real authors including Steve Barlow and Steve Skidmore, Tony Mitton and Simon James.

Big Write

Here at Thornbury we understand bringing together all the elements that go into a piece of writing is a complex process and our children need encouragement and support to be able to see themselves as writers.

We plan very carefully, activities that give children a real purpose for their writing and wherever possible a genuine audience.

We have introduced a regular ‘Big Write’ task across the school where our children have the opportunity to apply the skills they have been taught and receive constructive feedback about ways to improve their work.

ICT

ICT is linked to Literacy where it is meaningful.

This happens here in a range of ways. Examples of this include: using a variety of phonics websites to support a Letters and Sounds, publishing a newspaper page children have produced, using images saved from film as the backdrop for story writing.

In addition web pages are often used as text stimulus during the shared and independent part of a reading session.

Assessment

We are rigorous in monitoring our children’s progress; using this information to ensure our able children are challenged and children who are in danger of falling behind are picked up quickly and the appropriate interventions put in place.

We use Literacy APP materials and SAT materials to support the assessment judgements we make.

Homework

We set homework for Literacy across the school. This takes many forms. Expectations for this are shared with children and parents regularly.
