Bored of sitting around?
Learn and develop new skills!
Do you want to find out about a variety of sports and activities? Then you need to read all about our Physical Education plan at Thornbury Primary School.
At Thornbury we understand the importance of fitness enabling pupils to develop physically, mentally, creatively and socially. In our school we provide children with a balance of gymnastics, dance, games, swimming and an athletics programme.
We help children to develop their co-ordination, learn new skills to participate in individual and team sports, become a good team member and encourage fair play and sportsmanship.
Gymnastics
Pupils study a variety of themes over the year. Gymnastics involves floor and apparatus work and includes working individually and with a partner to develop fluent sequences of movement using a range of levels, speed and pathways. Gymnastics also addresses the strength and stamina needed when developing moves with fluency and control. Pupils are also given the opportunity to perform and share their sequences, discussing ways forward and improvement to strive to make sequences even more dynamic.
Gymnastics is collated into themes across Key Stages 1 and 2:

Games
Pupils develop a range of skills, which are utilised in mini versions of recognised games as children progress through the school. Pupils are encouraged to develop stamina and understand the warming up and cooling down in each games lesson.
Games concentrates on individual skills in ball control on KS1, working towards small/mini versions of recognised games in KS2. Many games have been included from the Top Sport Scheme.

Swimming
Due to the links with colleges and courses offered by the county children undertake an intensive swimming programme. This can range from teaching children basic stroke work to developing pupil’s abilities on survival work. So come and splash about with us!
Athletics
Athletics is undertaken in the summer term. Children are encouraged to cover a wide range of activities from sprinting, long distance running, high jump, long jump and throwing. You can even gain certificates for your achievements by joining an athletics club.
Most importantly we encourage pupils to try a variety of sports and have fun whilst learning.
