child with their reading.

Narrative:

Retrieval question, find an answer directly from the text e.g. ‘What colour dress was Sarah wearing?’

  • Effect of word choice. e.g. ‘Why does the writer choose the word sparkling to describe the ice?’
  • Giving an opinion on character’s actions and feelings e.g. ‘Why do you think Fred did that/ said that to Joe?’
  • ‘How do you think he/ she felt when …..happened?’ Always ask children to explain how they know by referring back to the text.
  • ‘Do you think Fred was right/ wrong/ angry when he did/ said?’ Give a reason for the text to support your answer.

Non Narrative: 

Retrieval: find an answer directly from the text e.g.

  • What year was the bridge built?
  • What is the purpose of the diagram/glossary/table of information?
  • What is the purpose of the headings/subheadings?
  • Why are they written in heavy bold type?
  • What is the purpose of this article? e.g. to persuade the reader to do….
  • Why do you think the writer chose these words? Ask against key/emotive vocabulary.

Ask for children to consider the issue within the text ‘How would you feel? Would you have liked to…?’ Always ask to refer own opinion back to the text.

Ask to find a word/ phrase in the text which means the same as or which tells us something happened e.g. that it snowed.

Look at comparisons, e.g. ‘Why did the writer compare the spiders web to the lace?
