The Arts
At Thornbury Primary School we believe that the arts play an important role in the education of all our pupils. The arts encompass Art and Design, Drama, Music and Physical Education as well as aspects of literature and Media Studies: the arts are also studied through ICT. They have a vital part to play in the development of creativity, imagination and personal response in our children. They:
promote distinctive ways of understanding self, developing individual abilities and finding personal satisfaction and enjoyment
emphasise particular ways of communicating with others
develop aesthetic awareness
make an important social and economical contribution to our society
develop an awareness of our heritage
Aims of the Arts:
To promote pupils' affective development
To promote pupils' physical development
To promote pupils' cognitive development
To contribute to pupils' personal development
To contribute to pupils' social development
To promote an awareness of cultural heritage, values and diversity.
In trying to achieve these aims we take account of these generic outcomes by encouraging the children to:
use a range of approaches, materials, techniques, skills and media
express feelings, ideas, thoughts, solutions
work collaboratively and independently
celebrate confidently their achievements
evaluate and appreciate the full extent of their work
